Congressman Engel Internship Program

This year, the Office of Congressman Eliot L. Engel is searching for prospective students who wish to intern at our Bronx District Office. Congressman Engel currently represents parts of The Bronx and Westchester counties.

The Bronx District Office is located at 3655 Johnson Avenue, between 238th Street and the Henry Hudson Parkway, in the Riverdale section of The Bronx. It is accessible by public transportation: one could take the 1 train to 238th Street and Broadway or the BX 10 bus to Riverdale Avenue at 238th Street.

The office operates Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Interns are expected to be punctual.

Responsibilities
Duties include: taking phone calls, transmitting messages, and assisting official staff with constituent casework. In addition, interns will be involved in serving the interests of the community by dealing with multiple agencies across the City, State, and Federal levels of government. This includes the drafting letters and, if necessary, directly contacting representatives of government agencies in order to address the problems and concerns of the constituency.

Aside from the varying duties, a prospective intern should be able to communicate effectively, be an attentive listener, and possess good writing skills. This is an unpaid internship, but can be counted for course credit. Though we are open to a variety of academic backgrounds, preferred candidates would be those majoring in Political Science, Social Work, Government Affairs or History.

As an intern in the Office of Congressman Engel, one is expected to act with the utmost courtesy and professionalism. We expect our interns to respect the office and its constituents, as the office serves not only at the pleasure of the community, but also as the public face of Congressman Engel. Working at the District Office will provide interns with the experience of working in an active, ground-level operation of a Congressional office. It is a concrete actualization of civics in action.

How to Apply
