Mount Saint Vincent Raises Nearly $500,000 at Annual Scholarship Tribute Dinner

5/1/2017

Riverdale, N.Y. –  The University of Mount Saint Vincent hosted its annual Scholarship Tribute Dinner at Cipriani 25 Broadway on April 27, raising nearly $500,000 toward scholarship funds for talented and deserving students. The evening is the Mount’s signature fundraising event, crowning the College’s yearlong effort to ensure each student’s potential is defined by his or her ambitions, not their financial means.

This year, the College honored Frank Kurre, managing partner of global tax firm Grant Thornton’s Metro New York & New England territory. In his speech recognizing Mr. Kurre, Mount President Charles L. Flynn, Jr. noted Mr. Kurre’s appreciation of the College’s motto, “Teach Me Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge.” Mr. Kurre said he could not think of a better slogan.

“You are comfortable and forthright about the role of faith in your life,” Dr. Flynn said in his remarks. “Saint Thomas found compelling Aristotle’s understanding that virtues are the habits of goodness, the marriage of discipline and knowledge. In your work and life, you exemplify these two insights, demonstrating and teaching Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge.”

“I love [the Mount] with everything in me,” said scholarship recipient Andrew Curiel ’18. A member of the Mount’s Men’s Basketball team, Mr. Curiel was featured in a video that premiered at the 2017 Scholarship Tribute Dinner. The video illustrates how a Mount Saint Vincent education encourages students, like Mr. Curiel, to utilize and pursue their passions. It shows how these students and others move beyond their comfort zones, embrace challenges, and thrive. Mr. Curiel is the co-founder of Be You Stay True, a basketball group for disadvantaged youth, and he credited the College’s emphasis on service-based learning and the development of the whole person for both his academic success and his dedication to helping others.

The Scholarship Tribute Dinner allows the College to recognize the generosity of scholarship donors and the recipients of their awards. All proceeds from the gala directly support scholarships and financial aid programs, providing students the best academic opportunities available, regardless of economic background.
