Mount Students Venture Into the Woods on April 24
4/17/2009
The student repertory company at the University of Mount Saint Vincent, known as the CMSV Players, will debut their rendition of the Broadway musical Into the Woods on April 24 at 8:00 pm in Hayes Auditorium. Inspired by Bruno Bettleheim’s 1976 book, “The Uses of Enchantment,” the musical intertwines the plots of several Brothers Grimm fairy tales and follows them further to explore the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests.
The theme of the show is life’s trials and tribulations set amid the backdrop of well known fairy tales. The main characters are taken from the stories of Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, and Cinderella, tied together by a more original story involving a baker and his wife and their quest to begin a family. It also includes references to several other well-known tales.
While the play explores some adult topics, children will enjoy the show because of the fairy tale references. The play opens on April 24. Additional performances will be held on April 25 at 2:00 pm and 8:00 pm, on April 26 at 2:00 pm, on May 1 and May 2, at 8:00 pm. Tickets are $5.00 for the Mount community and seniors, $7.00 for guests and all others.
