Migrants for Export: How the Philippine State Brokers Labor to the World

The University of Mount Saint Vincent’s Center for International Studies is pleased to present distinguished guest lecturer Robyn Magalit Rodriguez of Rutgers University discussing her book, Migrants for Export: How the Philippine State Brokers Labor to the World. The presentation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. November 30, 2010 in the President’s Reception Room on the University of Mount Saint Vincent campus in Riverdale, N.Y.

Dr. Robyn Magalit Rodriguez is an assistant professor of the Department of Sociology at Rutgers University, New Brunswick-Piscataway. Dr. Rodriguez received her Ph.D. in sociology from the University of California, Berkeley. She has also held academic appointments at the University of San Francisco and Kassel University in Germany. This year, Dr. Rodriguez published her first book, Migrants for Export: How the Philippine State Brokers Labor to the World, which she examines the Philippines’ emergence as one of the top labor-exporting countries in the world. In 2009, she was selected as one of the Filipina Women’s Network’s 100 Most Influential Filipina Women in the U.S.

Nearly 10 percent of the University of Mount Saint Vincent student body is of Filipino decent.
