CMSV Students Raise $21,000 for Cancer Research

Riverdale, N.Y. – Students at the University of Mount Saint Vincent raised $21,000 for the American Cancer Society at their inaugural “Relay for Life” event on Friday, April 19 2013.
Over 250 students and their supporters attended Relay for Life that began at 3 p.m. on the Great Lawn and finished at 3 a.m. the next day. The event featured live music, games, and activities including a speech by New York Giants linebacker and cancer survivor Mark Herzlich. Cancer survivors and their care-givers were honored with a special Survivor Ceremony Lap. Later in the evening, participants memorialized loved ones lost to cancer through the candle-lit Luminaria Ceremony.
The driving force behind the event was Kristin Yanniello ‘13 of Kings Park, Long Island. The Student Government President became inspired to bring Relay for Life to the Mount after experiencing the loss of a family member.
“Relay for Life is a fun way to do something charitable,” she said. “It was amazing to have the whole campus – students, faculty and staff – rally together for a worthwhile cause.”
Dianna Dale, Vice President for Student Affairs & Dean of Students, shared that the American Cancer Society was impressed with this amazing fundraising effort, especially since this was the first Relay for Life hosted at the Mount. “Kudos to our students,” she said. “Service is a way of life for our students, and when they decide to get behind a project, nothing can stop them.”
