Riverdale, N.Y. – The University of Mount Saint Vincent is pleased to join President Obama in celebrating National Hispanic-Serving Institutions Week Sept. 16-22, 2012.

The University of Mount Saint Vincent, a Catholic, ecumenical liberal arts institution located on a scenic campus in the Riverdale section of New York City, is a federally-designated Hispanic and Minority Serving-Institution.

In 2010, a National Science Foundation-funded study showed the University of Mount Saint Vincent has the highest graduation rate in the country for Latino students in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The Mount also ranked first among the 25 Hispanic Serving Institutions identified in the study as models of effective practices.

The Mount continuously produces standout Hispanic graduates in STEM fields, as well as all other academic disciplines. Recent examples include Mount alumnae Alexandria Bobe ’11, who is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Nutritional & Molecular Metabolism at the University of Chicago and completed original research at Albert Einstein College of Medicine while an undergraduate at the Mount; and Ana Uruena ’11, who is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Genetics & Developmental Biology at University of Texas Southwestern. While at the Mount, Ms. Uruena received top national honors for her original research on drosophila (fruit flies) and completed a research internship at MIT during the summer. Ms. Bobe is a native of Bronx, N.Y., and Ms. Uruena hails from Caracas, Venezuela.

The purpose of National Hispanic-Serving Institution Week is to honor the work and commitment of HSIs in addressing the higher educational needs of Hispanic students through institutional and academic support, according to a new release.
