College of Mount Saint Vincent to Host Second Relay for Life Event April 4, 2014

4/4/2014

Riverdale, N.Y. —The University of Mount Saint Vincent will host Relay for Life on its Riverdale Campus, Friday, April 4, 2014 from 2:30 p.m. to 12 a.m. the next day, in the New Gym, Peter Jay Sharp Athletic and Recreation Center. The event will feature games and activities to provide entertainment and build camaraderie, including speeches by cancer survivors Diem Brown and student survivor Diana Famularo.

Last year during the inaugural Relay for Life event at the College, more than 250 Mount students and their supporters who attended the event raised $21,000 for the American Cancer Society.

“Relay For Life is important because it brings together the community for one great charity cause,” says Rema Sayed ’14, President of the CMSV Student Government. “We are bringing awareness to CMSV about cancer research, and cancer treatment. We are appreciating life, and those that have survived cancer, those we have lost, and those that were caregivers. Without the American Cancer Society, and without charity events such as Relay For Life, there would be less birthdays being celebrated around the United States.”

The Relay for Life event raises funds and awareness to save lives from cancer. Organized by the American Cancer Society each year, it is attended by more than 4 million people in more than 20 countries. During a Relay event, participants and survivors celebrate what they’ve overcome during the Survivors Lap. During the Luminaria Ceremony, participants remember people lost to cancer, and honor people who have fought or are fighting cancer. The Fight Back Ceremony inspires Relay participants to take tangible action against a disease that has taken too much.
