Mount Professor Cynthia Meyers Featured in Wired Article


Riverdale, N.Y. – Cynthia Meyers, Associate Professor of Communication, was quoted in the February 28, 2017 Wired magazine article, “The Tricky Art of Podcast Ads is About to Get Even Trickier.” The article explores how podcast advertisements are causing young mediums to struggle with “credibility in the face of commerce.”

Additionally, the article highlights that advertisements don’t necessarily sound like ads during podcasts—they are being slipped in the middle of podcasts so that an audience may be more inclined to listen to the entire advertisement. “When hosts do the ads, advertisers are assuming there’s a parasocial relationship between the host and the listener,” said Dr. Meyers.

She continued, “There’s a tension about the sincerity of an endorsement. The danger of integrating ads is that the audience gets cynical, and stops believing it.”

In recent years, Dr. Meyers has been featured in numerous media outlets through her book, A Word from Our Sponsor: Admen, Advertising, and the Golden Age of Radio. She has also been honored by the Library of American Broadcasting Foundation and awarded the Alvin A. Achenbaum Travel Grant.
