Riverdale, N.Y.–In recent efforts to promote recycling and mindful waste solutions on campus, the University of Mount Saint Vincent Facilities Department has teamed up with Campus Ministry to establish the CMSV Green Team. The Green Team is the Mount’s new initiative to raise awareness of keeping the campus green.

Paul Siano, associate director of Facilities, came up with the idea because of the growing litter problem on campus. “It is my hope that this program will encourage students to litter less and in colder months, to pick up excess litter. Participants are given a t-shirt, litter collectors, gloves, and safety glasses in order to ensure safety and efficiency.” Mr. Siano also explains, “We want to ensure students safety, so we ask that they only collect full bottles and plastic, not broken glass or any unsafe [items].” The main focus is collecting trash that will not harm students and trash that is carelessly thrown on the floor.

The Riverdale campus has rich history and immense beauty. Joe Britton ’18, a new member of the Green Team, recently participated in the Green Team’s first campus clean up in September. “It was a lot of hard work, but it was worth it to see all of that litter gone from campus,” he says.

There will be one more opportunity to join the Green Team during the fall semester on November 18. The Green Team will pick up again in February in the spring semester. Students interested in joining the Green Team should visit the Office of Campus Ministry to sign up.
