Mount Community Supports Yards for Yeardley

4/7/2016

First college in New York State to complete one million yards in one day

Riverdale, N.Y. – On April 6, the University of Mount Saint Vincent became New York State’s first collegiate institution to complete one million yards in one day as part of the Yards for Yeardley 2016 campaign. In conjunction with the One Love Foundation, Yards for Yeardley seeks to spread awareness about relationship violence and celebrate the life of Yeardley Love.

Yeardley Love was a senior lacrosse player at the University of Virginia just weeks shy of her graduation in 2010 when she was beaten to death by her ex-boyfriend. The One Love Foundation honors Ms. Love by working to bring an end to relationship violence by educating, empowering, and activating campus communities in a movement for change. The Mount joins numerous sports teams and communities from colleges and universities across the country who have committed to raise awareness and pledge one million yards in memory of Ms. Love.

“This is a terrific example of the dedication and generosity of Mount athletes,” says President Charles L. Flynn, Jr. “What’s even better is that it is characteristic of Mount students—they are leaders, including leaders in service.”

As part of the NCAA’s Division III Week, the Department of Athletics and Recreation, the Office of Student Activities, Leadership, and Commuter Life, and the Student Athlete Advisory Committee helped organize the event, inspiring athletes, students, administrators, faculty, and staff to complete 627 miles—surpassing the College’s initial goal by more than 50 miles.

The Mount community walked, jogged, and ran from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. around Hayes Auditorium and the Peter Jay Sharp Athletic and Recreation Center, and for every mile completed, a pinwheel was placed around the lawn of the Grace Center.
