Mount Hosts National Communication Association Conference

6/1/2017

Riverdale, N.Y. – Mount Saint Vincent is hosting the National Communication Association (NCA) conference, “New Horizons in the Ethnography of Communication,” June 6-8, 2017, using an Advancing the Discipline Grant.

Last fall, NCA awarded Mount Assistant Professor of Communication Michelle Scollo and Purchase College Assistant Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences Trudy Milburn an Advancing the Discipline Grant to organize NCA’s Language and Social Interaction division conference. The event unites ethnography of communication (EC) scholars, practitioners, and students to discuss cultural discourse analysis, speech codes research, teaching and practice, among other topics.

Dr. Scollo is the 2012 recipient of NCA’s Outstanding Publication Award for Language and Social Interaction Scholarship for an article on cultural approaches to discourse analysis. In addition to EC, which focuses on the field of communication in the wider context of social and cultural practices, Dr. Scollo’s academic interests include cultural and intercultural communication; interpersonal communication and culture; media, language, and social interaction; and environmental communication.

The conference honors Donal Carbaugh, University of Massachusetts at Amherst Professor of Communication, and celebrates the 20th anniversary of his “Cultural Discourse Theory.” The theory is used by EC scholars for research, teaching, and intervention worldwide.

“We are honored to have Dr. Carbaugh with us for such an exciting event,” Dr. Scollo said. “We’re also looking forward to having scholars from a number of universities and colleges throughout the world come together to collaborate on an important area of study, more important now, perhaps, than ever.”

Forty speakers from colleges and universities across the United States as well as the United Kingdom, China, Finland, and Latvia are scheduled to attend. Presentations will include communication practices in a variety of cultures and communities, including African American, Asian American, British, Bulgarian, Chinese, Egyptian, Finnish, Hungarian, Israeli, Japanese, Latvian, Mexican, Native American, Singaporean, and Turkish. Topics will include education, environmental communication, English as a second language (ESL), health communication, identity, immigration, intercultural and interpersonal communication, language revitalization, mass media, new communication technologies, organizational communication, public discourse, participation and policy, and social justice.
