Mount Saint Vincent Investigating Alleged Incident by Members of Men’s Basketball Team

9/21/2015

Riverdale, N.Y. – The University of Mount Saint Vincent is investigating allegations that members of the Men’s Basketball team were involved in activities that were videoed and posted to social media on Thursday, September 3. The video includes references to a freshman initiation, which is in violation of the College’s anti-hazing policy. College administrators continue to advocate that “respect for persons” is our most basic value. The College’s anti-hazing policy is enforced without exception.

While none of the students suffered serious injury or required outside medical attention, the College has a zero tolerance policy for hazing. The offense is more egregious given the knowledge of the alleged incident involving the Mount Saint Vincent Men’s Soccer team.

The seven members of Mount Saint Vincent Men’s Basketball team have been subjected to an initial penalty, based on preliminary information regarding the activities on Thursday evening, and have been temporarily suspended from all team activities. Additional sanctions will be imposed as the facts and circumstances are revealed, as administrators continue to work to determine the specific details of the incident. A pre-hearing conference will be held this week. If the student athletes are found to have violated the College’s Code of Conduct, team members could face probation or indefinite suspension.
