Mount Saint Vincent Senior Wins Prestigious Clark Fellowship

9/21/2005

University of Mount Saint Vincent senior William Hallowell, of Rochester, NY, has received The Clark Foundation Fellowship, awarded to students who exhibit outstanding potential for leadership positions in community based non-profit organizations. The three year program awards each Fellow up to $30,000 as they begin their career in the non-profit arena and pursue a Master’s degree related to the field at a New York City college or university.

The Clark Foundation Fellowship is highly competitive; no more than six Clark Foundation Fellowships are awarded each year. Applicants must be nominated by their college or university and take part in a multi-step application and interview process. Individuals seeking the fellowship must possess a strong academic record, leadership roles in student, professional and nonprofit organizations, and a commitment to management of non-profit organizations and community service.

Hallowell, 21, is a communication major at Mount Saint Vincent. In 2003 he co-founded Path-U-Find Communications, a not for profit media organization dedicated to bringing speakers and performers with positive messages to high schools, and community groups. Hallowell developed and helps coordinate the “Peace Project,” a day-long event held annually on the College’s campus. “Peace Project” brings together New York area high school students to learn from inspirational speakers who discuss such topics as school violence, disabilities, youth and family issues, and leadership. Additionally, Hallowell is the founder and host of Teenwebonline.com, a website and blog teens can use to engage in discussion about a host of social issues. He has also authored a book, entitled reACTION Time, designed for young people.

Hallowell is interested in pursuing an education in public policy, closely studying the dynamic between politics, media, and their influence on society. Which University of Mount Saint Vincent President Charles J. Flynn Jr. believes Hallowell is uniquely suited for saying “Billy is already examining questions of justice, fairness and morality, his academic and social endeavors are representations of this study. In his actions and in his word Billy strives, and succeeds, in fulfilling the mission of the University of Mount Saint Vincent, he is an ethical, caring and compassionate member of the community.” The University of Mount Saint Vincent is a community Hallowell feels blessed to be a part of, saying “the Mount has helped shape me, the people here have fostered my interests and questions and prepared me to for the challenges and opportunities I take on in the future.”
