New York Times Reporter Michael Powell Visits the College of Mount Saint Vincent to Discuss Historic 2008 Election

New York Times reporter Michael Powell, will address students at the University of Mount Saint Vincent on Monday, November 24 in the President’s Reception Room at 2:30 p.m. He will discuss his experience as a correspondent who covered the recent election and followed John McCain and Barack Obama on the campaign trail as they battled each other for presidency. The general public is invited to attend.

The event is led by Dr. Joseph Skelly and Dr. Jacqueline Guzda who currently co-teach a class entitled Election 2008. Dr. Skelly, a history professor, teaches politics while Dr. Guzda, a communications professor, analyzes how the media plays a role in the election process. Topics of interest include the Electoral College, political agendas, women in politics, and how people are elected into office at the local and national level.

“I talk about how the media covers the election,” says Dr. Guzda, “but Michael Powell was a guy who was actually out there.” Powell contributed daily articles in the New York Times from the campaign trail.

The 2008 election is an historic one where Barack Obama emerged as the President elect. The election also put Democrats in control of the House, the Senate and the White House for the first time since 1995.
