Nursing Faculty Featured at Regional and Global Conferences

11/8/2016

Riverdale, N.Y.- A group of Mount Saint Vincent nursing professors recently presented their peer mentoring study, titled “Developing a Culture of Caring and Support: The Significance of a Peer Mentorship Program in an Undergraduate Baccalaureate Nursing Program,” at Maimonides Medical Center’s Fourth Annual Nursing Research Conference at Brooklyn Academy of Music on November 7.

Associate Professor of Nursing Deborah Kramer, EdD, FNP, RN, CPNP, Associate Professor of Nursing Sandra M. Hillman, PhD, RN, and Assistant Professor of Nursing Mirian Zavala, DNS, RN, focused their presentation on the effects of a peer mentoring program on mentees’ academic performance and social development in an undergraduate baccalaureate nursing curriculum. Academic leaders are increasingly concerned about the retention rate of nursing students; peer mentoring programs may be one strategy to combat this issue. Studies indicate the mutual benefits of mentoring to both mentor and mentee.

Professor Kramer will also be participating in the Congress on Paediatric Palliative Care—A Global Gathering, in Rome, Italy on November 16-19. She will be presenting her poster, “Helping the Helpers: Focus Groups in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology to Explore Factors Contributing to Burnout.”

Last month, Professor Kramer presented a webinar titled “Evidence-Based Complementary Approaches to Brain Development in Children,” on behalf of the American Holistic Nurses Association. The presentation, in part, touted the benefits of fruit and vegetable consumption, fish oil and organic dairy products to promote healthier brain function.
