Red Monkey Theater Group Presents William Shakespeare’s Hamlet

2/20/2018

Riverdale, N.Y. – Red Monkey Theater Group (RMTG)—the University of Mount Saint Vincent’s resident theater company—joins the M&M Performing Arts Company to present Shakespeare’s greatest tragedy, Hamlet, in a fast-paced, 100-minute adaptation with intimate staging on Saturday, March 10 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, March 11 at 2 p.m. Both performances will be held in Cahill Theater and are free for University of Mount Saint Vincent students and staff with College ID.

The energetic, scaled-down production of Hamlet aims to remove as many barriers as possible between the Bard’s words and the audience.

“One of the reasons we come to the theater is to recognize ourselves, and Hamlet is an enduring character because people from all walks of life, ages, and nationalities have recognized their essential humanity in him,” said RMTG Artistic Director Tal Aviezer. “Shakespeare’s language is electrifying because he manages somehow to articulate thoughts that we all recognize as truth, but that we ourselves have never been able to express. We hope our production will convey that sense of emotional, intellectual, and spiritual homecoming to our audience.”

Directed by Tal Aviezer, the cast includes Kate Berg, Germainne Lebron, Nick Leshi, Melinda O’Brien, Lawrence J. Reina, Gregg Shults, and Mikel Von Brodbeck. The production team includes Rachel Tamarin, stage manager; Carolyn J. Fuchs, costume and set design; David Ullman, lighting design; and Mount student Emilie Swartvagher ’18, assistant stage manager.

There will be a complimentary post-performance discussion with the cast and director following the matinee on March 11.

This program is funded, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
