Mount Alums Connect with Current Students Interested in a Career in Science

On November 12, 2008, the Dolphinlink Alumnae/i Network, a joint collaboration between Alumnae/i Relations and the Career Development Office connecting alums with current students, will host a panel of graduates from the Mount who majored or minored in science. Six special guests will share their work experiences with current students. The event will be held in the President’s Reception Room in the Administration Building at 7:00 p.m.The speakers for the panel are Samantha Cojuangco ’05, Marge Kistinger Cooper, R.N. ’79, Zsolt Kulcsar, M.D ’03, Barbara Cronin-LaPerche ’85, James Melillo, D.D.S ‘99, and Nicole Palma ’05.

The panel will help students understand what they can do with their degree after they graduate. The speakers will also be able to answer questions regarding the students’ career choice.

“It is so important for students to be aware of the diverse career options that will be available to them when they graduate,” says Palma, a graduate who received her BS in Biochemistry in 2005. “This affords them the opportunity to tailor their education via elective credits to prepare for a certain profession; and also helps to diminish the feeling of ‘what now?’ that many graduating seniors experience.”

Students who study science can pursue a career as a teacher, nurse, doctor, dentist, or physician’s assistant. In spite of the possibility of a looming recession, jobs in the healthcare industry continue to grow. In 2008, the health care sector overall has grown by 363,000 jobs, making it the largest industry in the United States.
