The Charter High School for Law and Social Justice, a partnership between the University of Mount Saint Vincent and New York Law School was the focus of a New York Law Journal article. The story explored how the new School weaves the law into its curriculum.

Located in the south Bronx, the School aims to provide students with a comprehensive high school education and lay the academic and social groundwork for success in college and careers. Using a theme of law and social justice, the School is meant to engage, inspire, and empower students, and equip them with the academic skills to earn a Regents diploma and gain admission to the college of their choice prepared for success. The School offers an extended school-day and year, intensive support for English language learners and students with special needs, and an innovative four-year legal curriculum that will combine classroom learning with real-world experiences through social justice community service projects and internships.

Before the opening of the School in September, its inaugural class took part in a four-week “summer bridge” program at the College, to prepare them for the first semester. As part of the preparation, students saw the Bronx Supreme Court in action and traveled to City Hall.

Chair and Assistant Professor of Teacher Education Mary Ellen Sullivan, considers the School a “natural extension of the mission of the College,” worked with New York Law School professor Richard Marsico on the application to establish the charter school, approved by the New York State Board of Regents in December 2013.
