Over $50,000 Raised for Typhoon Relief by Students at the College of Mount Saint Vincent

Students at the University of Mount Saint Vincent have raised more than $50,000 for Concern Worldwide’s Typhoon Relief campaign. After reaching $20,000 in November, Mount students have continued efforts to raise funds to help the 11.8 million people displaced by the natural disaster in the Philippines.
Through their own initiative, students organized and participated in several fundraising activities, such as “Breakfast for One Dollar,” a bottle collection, and a “Christmas at the Mount” t-shirt fundraiser. Filipino student group SAMAHAN (Students at the Mount Advancing their Humanity and Nationality) donated funds from their benefit show and annual Simbang Gabi Mass towards the relief campaign.
“It is inspiring, yet not surprising, to see our community respond so generously to our dear brothers and sisters in the Philippines,” says Matthew Shields, Director of Campus Ministry. “While we surpassed our goal of $50,000 towards the Filipino relief effort, our commitment to alleviate global suffering is ongoing.”
The College celebrates a close connection with the Philippines. In 2010, the College presented the Elizabeth Seton Medal to the Hon. Beningo Aquino, president of the Philippines. His mother, Corazon Aquino, graduated from the Mount in 1953 and later became the first female President of the Philippines. More than ten percent of the students enrolled at the University of Mount Saint Vincent are of Filipino descent.
The College invites the local community to donate online. Contributions may be also sent via check to the University of Mount Saint Vincent with “Concern Filipino Relief” in the memo.
