Ambassador Farouk to discuss radical ideological movements in the Middle East
Riverdale, N.Y. – The University of Mount Saint Vincent is proud to welcome His Excellency and Ambassador Ahmed Farouk, Consul General of Egypt in New York, as part of the ParaMount Perspectives Speaker Series on Monday, September 26, 2016 at 4:00 p.m. in the Blue Room. Ambassador Farouk will present “The History, Ideology, and Strategy of Radical Movements in the Middle East,” an exploration of the complex ideologies underpinning global terrorism. The event is open to the public.
Ambassador Farouk will explore whether an agreement on the meaning of radicalization, extremism, or terrorism can be reached; how to address the causes of the increasing radicalization of young people; how to get to the roots of conflicts and understand what leads to intolerance and extreme acts—such as terrorist attacks—among civilians; and how to respond when attacks target places outside the Western world.
Selina Macias ’17, an English major with a double minor in Spanish and Philosophy, will introduce the Ambassador. Last year, Selina was the recipient of a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, which she used to spend her Spring ’16 semester volunteering with Damien House in Guayaquil, Ecuador, where she provided care for elderly patients suffering from leprosy.
About Ambassador Ahmed Farouk
Ambassador Ahmed Farouk is the Deputy Assistant Foreign Minister of Egypt and Consul General of Egypt in New York City. He previously served as Deputy Assistant Foreign Minister for Legal Affairs and Chairman of the UN Working Group IV to Countering Piracy off the coast of Somalia. He was Ambassador of Egypt to Slovenia and served in posts in Tokyo, Jordan, and the Holy See, where he was awarded by Pope John Paul II. Ambassador Farouk holds an M.A. in International Law and a license of law from Cairo University as well as a B.A. in Management from Helwan University in Egypt.
