Cardinal John Ribat to Visit Mount Saint Vincent
3/14/2018
Riverdale, N.Y. – The University of Mount Saint Vincent is pleased to announce the upcoming visit of Cardinal John Ribat of Papua New Guinea on Monday, March 19, 2018. During his visit, the Cardinal will present “Climate Change, Sustainability, and the Common Good,” a talk that reflects on Pope Francis’ environmental encyclical Laudato Si. His presentation will be held in the President’s Reception Room from 1:30 to 3:45 p.m.
Cardinal Ribat was elevated as the first Papua New Guinean Cardinal of the Catholic Church by Pope Francis on November 19, 2016. The Archbishop of Port Moresby, he was the nation’s first locally-born cardinal and the first cardinal from the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart.
Papua New Guinea is among the nations considered most at risk for the effects of climate change. Cardinal Ribat has worked diligently to share the experiences of the people of Papua New Guinea, heeding Pope Francis’ call to make more commitments in trying to find solutions to climate change.
The lecture is sponsored by the College’s Department of Accounting, Business, and Economics, Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, and Office of Campus Ministry, as well as the Sisters of Charity of New York’s Office of Peace, Justice, and Integrity of Creation and the Metro New York chapter of the Global Catholic Climate Movement.
