Riverdale, N.Y. – The University of Mount Saint Vincent is pleased to announce that Associate Professor of Communication Dr. Cynthia Meyers’ book, A Word From Our Sponsor: Admen, Advertising, and the Golden Age of Radio, is slated for publication by Fordham University Press in Fall 2013.
Based on archival research Dr. Meyers conducted at Duke University, University of Wisconsin, and the University of Maryland, A Word from Our Sponsor tells the story of how admen and advertising agencies became the primary producers of “golden age” radio. Comparing and contrasting the approaches of different advertising agencies in charge of popular radio programs, A Word from Our Sponsor explores the complex commercial origins of popular culture in the 1930s and 1940s.
Dr. Meyers, a resident of the Morningside Heights neighborhood of New York, N.Y., received her Ph.D. in Radio-Television-Film from the University of Texas, Austin, and has also taught at New York University and Hunter College.
In addition, she received a faculty fellowship to attend the Time Warner College Professors Thought Leadership Seminar at the Time Warner Center Media Lab in New York City, from July 23-24, 2012. A group of college faculty, selected through a competitive application process, were invited to attend a seminar with executive vice presidents of media research from different areas of Time Warner, including Turner, Time, HBO, Warner Bros, and Warner Syndication.
