ARTEK Presents Annual Autumn Concert: Schubert Lieder

10/21/2016

Riverdale, N.Y. – The University of Mount Saint Vincent is proud to present a program of Schubert’s beautiful lieder, or German language songs, sung by the outstanding soprano Sarah Chalfy of ARTEK, New York City’s premier early music ensemble, on November 9 at 7 p.m. in the College’s President’s Reception Room.

Ms. Chalfy is an active performer on a variety of musical stages, from off-Broadway theatres to classical music concert halls to cabaret and rock venues. She has performed at the illustrious Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the Knitting Factory, and Don’t Tell Mama. The program includes two of Schubert’s famous song cycles: selections from Goethe’s “Wilhelm Meister” as well as Sir Walter Scott’s “Lady of the Lake,” including the original setting of Schubert’s “Ave Maria.”

Ms. Chalfy’s magical ability to evoke the emotional drama of poetry in any style is perfect for the poems of Goethe and Scott. Ms. Chalfy will be accompanied by Dr. Gwendolyn Toth, Mount Saint Vincent Choral Director, on the fortepiano—a historical copy of the piano that Schubert knew, and very different from a modern piano. Ms. Toth will also play a solo Impromptu by Schubert. The program will last approximately 50 minutes without intermission. Following the concert, the audience is invited to ask questions and try out the fortepiano.

No tickets or reservations are required; free to members of the University of Mount Saint Vincent community. Suggested donation for general audience members: $20 ($15 seniors).

ARTEK, directed by Gwendolyn Toth, is one of New York City’s most distinguished early music ensembles, with over 30 years of producing music from the Renaissance through early Romantic periods. ARTEK concerts and events are made possible, in part, with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
