College of Mount Saint Vincent Celebrates Student Achievements at 4th Annual Research and Service Symposium

Riverdale, N.Y. – The University of Mount Saint Vincent will host its 4th Annual Student Research and Service Symposium on Thursday, May 15, 2014 at 5:30 p.m. in Smith Hall. This event showcases the outstanding original research and service learning projects that Mount students complete every year.

The University of Mount Saint Vincent Student Research and Service Symposium is held to recognize students who have engaged in significant research and service initiatives, as well as the faculty and staff who serve as their mentors. Students will have the opportunity to present and highlight their recent research and service accomplishments to the campus community along with College benefactors, peers, parents, and local guidance counselors and principals.

2014 Student Research and Service Symposium: Works and Participants

Rosanna Lopez Alayon ‘14 (Bronx, NY) and Kimberly Ortega ‘14 (Brooklyn, NY) will present their research titled “Demographic Profile of the Sisters of Charity of New York: Preliminary Data.” This research poster was initially presented at the TriBeta NE-1 District Convention.

Colby Landeen ‘15 (Glenwood Plantation, ME) and Bernardo Garcia ‘15 (Jersey City, NJ) will present their research titled “Evaluation of the Watch-PAT home sleep study apparatus as an alternative sleep staging tool.” This research poster was initially presented at the Northeastern Regional Tri-Beta Meeting.

Kavita Bharrat ‘15 (Bronx, NY), Sean Remy ‘14 (Bronx, NY), Vrutant Patel ‘14 (Bronx, NY), Dwaine Pryce ‘15 (Brooklyn, NY), and Shivannie Goberdan ‘14 (Mount Vernon, NY) will present their research titled “Immunolocalization of Tubulin-binding cofactor E (TBCE)-like, the product of the mulet (mlt) gene, during spermatogenesis in Drosophila melanogaster.” This research poster won Third Place in the John S. Johnson Poster Awards for the NE-1 District Convention of Beta Beta Beta, the Biological Honor Society.

Katiuska Hernandez ‘15 (Bronx, NY), Indira Cepin ‘15 (Brooklyn, NY), Rodcliffe Wint ‘15 (Brooklyn, NY),Shyan Lovell ‘15 (Brooklyn, NY), Akime Nicholas ‘15 (Mount Vernon, NY),  and Christian Juarez ‘15(Yonkers, NY) will present their research titled “Using Drosophila melanogaster as a Model Organism to Study Reproductive Toxicants.” This research poster was initially presented at the TriBeta Regional Research Conference.

Alexa K. Harris ‘16 (Bronx, NY) will present her research titled “Computation of experimental solutions of a nonlinear wave equation for propagation of pulsatory waves in an invariant cosine structure.” This research was initially presented at the Hudson River Undergraduate Mathematics Conference (HRUMC XXI) and the Spuyten Duyvil Undergraduate Mathematics Conference (SDUMC IX).

James Wilkins ‘15 (Bristol, MA), Christina Quinn ‘14 (Maywood, NJ), and LeeAnn Brathwaite ‘15 (Mount Vernon, NY) will present their research titled “The Influence of the Sisters of Charity at a Vincentian Institution.” This research was initially presented at the Second Annual Student Symposium of the Vincentian Scholars for Social Justice, February ‘14-‘16, 2014.

Amy Fox ‘14 (Floral Park, NY) and Carolyn Sepulveda ‘14 (Yonkers, NY) will present their research titled “The Influence of Deception Role and Relationship Type on Judgments of Deceptions.” This research poster was initially presented at the Eastern Psychological Association Conference.

Katrina Collazo ‘14 (Bronx, NY) will present her research titled “Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP); History and Significance to Computer Science.” This research poster was initially presented at Hudson River Undergraduate Math Conference at Marist College. She will also present her honors thesis research titled “Experimental computing of a series solution of the Newtonian equation in an invariant sine structure.”

Steven J. Lonecke ‘14 (Richmond, NY) will present his research titled “Propagation of pulsatory waves of the Korteweg – de Vries equation in elliptic functions.” This research was initially presented at a joint meeting of the Hudson River Undergraduate Mathematics Conference (HRUMC XXI) and the Spuyten Duyvil Undergraduate Mathematics Conference (SDUMC IX).

Kerry Drake ‘14 (Staten Island, NY) will present her research titled “Self-Absorption? It Is Just Social Media” This research was initially presented at the 3rd Annual Westchester Undergraduate Research Conference.

Jane Holbrook ‘14 (Bronx, NY) will present her honors thesis research titled “Active Learning Techniques in Education.”

Nicholas Forlini ‘14 (Yonkers, NY) will present his honors thesis research titled “Clinical Care Guidelines for Patients with Alzheimer’s Disease.”
