College of Mount Saint Vincent Co-Hosting International Service Learning and Social Development Symposium

Riverdale, N.Y. – The University of Mount Saint Vincent is collaborating with IPSL (formerly known as the International Partnership for Service Learning) program and St. Mary’s University College to co-host IPSL’s biennial Symposium on International Service Learning and Social Development titled, “Re-thinking Study Abroad: Innovations in Advocacy, Partnership, and Service Ethic,” at St. Mary’s University College in the Twickenham area of London, England from November 11, 2013 – November 13, 2013.
The Mount has sent seven participants to the symposium, including four faculty members representing Sociology, Nursing, and Fine Arts, and three students representing Nursing, Sociology, and Teacher Education, as well as the Honors Program.
The symposium is a celebration of the new collaborations between the Mount, St. Mary’s, and IPSL. One of the key themes of the symposium is fostering undergraduate advocacy research in international service settings, where the Center for Undergraduate Research (CUR) at the Mount is playing a key role. One of the students attending is piloting a collaborative international model for student research that includes the CUR, Western Oregon University, IPSL, and St. Mary’s.
Keynote speakers at the symposium include Sister Cyril Mooney and Sister Annie Credidio. Sister Cyril has previously been featured by the Clinton Global Initiative, and is an internationally recognized leader and innovator in education of the destitute, based in Kolkata, India. Sister Annie Credidio has dedicated her life to bringing care and dignity to patients of Hansen’s disease (leprosy), and is founder of Fundación Padre Damien (Damien House), based in Guayaquil, Ecuador.
Registrants will learn more about advocacy research, instilling a lifelong ethic of service, and foundational partnerships in the field of international service-learning.
The symposium is co-sponsored by the University of Mount Saint Vincent, St. Mary’s, and IPSL.
