College of Mount Saint Vincent Honors Distinguished Alumnae/i at Ad Laudem Dei

The University of Mount Saint Vincent will honor two distinguished alumnae who contributed greatly to the sciences as part of its Ad Laudem Dei Awards on Tuesday, October 26, at 6 p.m. The Mount will honor alumnae Dr. Catherine Ruebenacker Mazzola ’90, a pediatric neurosurgeon, and longtime Mount biology professor Mary Edward Zipf S.C. ’62. at a private ceremony in Smith Hall on the Riverdale campus.
The Ad Laudem Dei award is presented to individuals who have made lasting contributions to their fields and who embody the spirit of charity synonymous with the University of Mount Saint Vincent’s philosophy of giving back. Awards are granted each year in the areas of economics, business and government; medicine and science; and arts, humanities, religion and education.
Dr. Catherine A. Mazzola is director of pediatric neurosurgery at Atlantic Health System (AHS) and director of the Craniofacial Center at AHS. Dr. Mazzola is certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgeons and the American Board of Pediatric Neurological Surgery. She graduated from the Mount in 1990 with a major in biochemistry, and completed her pediatric neurosurgical fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh. She finished her residency training in neurological surgery at UMDNJ- New Jersey Medical School, under the direction of Dr. Peter Carmel. As an active member of her profession, Dr. Mazzola gives approximately 10 lectures a year for patients and their families, nursing organizations, pediatricians and residents.
Sister Mary Edward Zipf is a professor of biology at the University of Mount Saint Vincent. She entered the Sisters of Charity in 1953 and graduated from the University of Mount Saint Vincent in 1962 with a major in biology and a minor in chemistry. Sister Mary Edward received her master’s degree at Fordham University in biological sciences and her Ph.D. in microbiology at the University of Maryland. She has been an educator for more than 50 years, 41 of which she has taught at the Mount.
