College of Mount Saint Vincent Participates in “Biggest Book Drive in History to Change History”

Riverdale, NY – The Campus Ministry office and Residence Life at the University of Mount Saint Vincent are sponsoring a book drive to help children caught in the war in Northern Uganda. They are supporting “Invisible Children,” a non-profit organization that encourages activism and creates awareness for the events Uganda. Donated books can be dropped off in room 113 in the Administration Building.

Brian Johnson, Resident Director at the Mount, was inspired to bring the program to the College after he learned his cousin worked closely with Invisible Children. The College is participating in the Biggest Book Drive in History to Change History. The program collects books, DVDs, music CDs, and Books on CD. Campus Ministry will collect books through January 31, 2009 and sent to children in Uganda.

Three California filmmakers started “Invisible Children” after they traveled to Africa and saw children as victims and soldiers of the war in Northern Uganda. The events inspired them to create a documentary named Invisible Children: Rough Cut. The film exposes violence, tragedy, war, and child soldiers. Since 2003, “Invisible Children” has sponsored a number of programs including internships, bracelet campaigns, scholarships, and teacher exchanges.

“Campus Ministry is supporting this book drive because the Mount is a learning community – one that encourages its students to engage the world beyond the classroom,” says Sr. Cecilia Harriendorf, head of Campus Ministry. “Sharing our books with those in developing countries is one practical way of putting our ideas and our ideals into practice.”
