College of Mount Saint Vincent Students & Alumni Embark on Third-Annual Weeklong Service Trip to Guatemala January 13 through 20, 2013
1/3/2013
Riverdale, N.Y. – University of Mount Saint Vincent nursing students and alumnae/i will head to Guatemala Jan. 13-20 for a service-learning trip sponsored by the University of Mount Saint Vincent Office of Alumnae/i Relations, Office of Campus Ministry, and the Sisters of Charity of New York.
This trip pairs the enthusiasm and skill of professional nurses with the history of the Guatemalan people and their current needs as experienced through the efforts of two extraordinary missionaries, Sister Immaculata Burke, S.C. and Sister Marie Tolle, S.C. and their longtime collaborator, Doctor Jose Miguel Vasquez.
Sr. Immaculata is a registered nurse and a highly respected member of the Guatemalan medical community. Her energy and ingenuity have helped to develop four Sister of Charity Clinics in the Sololá region of Guatemala. Sr. Marie is an educator and catechist whose commitment to the Guatemalan people is expressed through service. Doctor Vasquez has devoted his entire career to the health needs of indigent Guatemalans. These women and Doctor Vasquez, who is the primary physician at each of the Sister of Charity Clinics, have brought healing and hope to the struggling people of Guatemala for nearly forty years.
The week will include work at the Sisters of Charity clinics, afternoon trips to various sites in Guatemala, and prayer and reflection.
