College of Mount Saint Vincent to Host Anti-Human Trafficking Conference

Riverdale, N.Y. – The University of Mount Saint Vincent will host “Tackle Trafficking: Sex, Drugs and Shopping,” a one day conference on human rights, on Friday, October 18, 2013 in Smith Hall from 9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
The program will increase awareness and foster activism on human trafficking by focusing on sexual exploitation, forced labor and other forms of involuntary servitude. The conference is sponsored by the Lower Hudson Valley Catholic College and University Consortium.
“We want to enable all victims to become survivors,” says Dr. Barbara Ellen Black, Executive Director of the Lower Hudson Valley Catholic College and University Consortium. “I believe that if we can motivate our students to participate in the fight against sex trafficking and human slavery, we can combat this violence and abuse.”
Sr. Jean Flannelly, Executive Director of Mission, is the University of Mount Saint Vincent’s main contact for the event. “I’m delighted that the Mount is hosting this event,” she says. “It is important to stress that the day is about awareness and developing ways that we as individuals and members of communities can work for change.”
