College Students to Volunteer in Hurricane Region Thanksgiving Weekend

This Thanksgiving, three University of Mount Saint Vincent students are traveling to New Orleans to participate in the ongoing Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.  They will volunteer with organizations such as Catholic Charities, Habitat for Humanity, and the American Red Cross to provide assistance and comfort to those suffering from Katrina this holiday season.

Mount students Michael DeNoble `07 of Mahopac, Megan Fraino `08 of New City, and Anthony Morales `06 a native of the Bronx, are among a group of 15 students participating in the week-long service immersion organized by the Salesian Office of Youth Ministry, taking place November 21-27.

With the assistance of the College’s Campus Ministry Office, DeNoble, Fraino and Morales collected supplies and donations on campus before departing for New Orleans. “Mount Saint Vincent is lucky to have bright, committed young people, who care about the less fortunate and suffering, and will work for justice” according to Sr. Cecilia Harriendorf, Director of Campus Ministry at the College.

In addition to volunteering their time each student paid $150 dollars to go to New Orleans, where they will be assisting families associated with Salesian ministries by cleaning and repairing homes which were damaged by the Hurricane.  According to Salesian ministries “it will be seven days of hard work that will include prayer, mass, and faith-sharing.”
