Mount Faculty and Students Inducted into Scientific Research Society

Faculty members and students at the University of Mount Saint Vincent were inducted into the Scientific Research Society Sigma Xi this month after a Sigma Xi Chapter was officially started on campus. Sigma Xi is an international multidisciplinary research society whose programs and activities promote scientific enterprise, high ethical standards, and honor scientific achievement.

Faculty members and students at the University of Mount Saint Vincent were inducted into the Scientific Research Society Sigma Xi this month after a Sigma Xi Chapter was officially started on campus. Sigma Xi is an international multidisciplinary research society whose programs and activities promote scientific enterprise, high ethical standards, and honor scientific achievement.

Membership into Sigma Xi is by invitation.  Full membership is conferred upon faculty members who have shown noteworthy achievement as an original investigator in a field of pure or applied science or engineering.  In order for students to be invited, they must be nominated by a faculty member and have conducted and presented research.

Associate Professor of Biochemistry at the College, Pamela K. Kerrigan, who is the Northeast Associate Director of Sigma Xi, said that, “Being a part of Sigma Xi recognizes the research capabilities of our students and faculty.”

The Mounts’ faculty Sigma Xi members include:

  • Dr. Victor Miroshnikov, Assistant Professor of Mathematics
  • Dr. Carol Vicino, Professor and Director of Nuring
  • Dr. Kathleen Flaherty, Associate Professor of Nursing
  • Ms. Marta Taddeo, Assistant Professor of Nursing

The Mount’s student members, all from the class of 2009, include Ryan Foti, Christina Lavelle and Nicolas Ramos.

Over the course of the Society’s history, more than 200 of its members have won the Nobel Prize and many more have earned election to the National Academies of Sciences and Engineering.  There are nearly 60,000 Sigma Xi members in more than 100 countries around the world.
