Mount Hosts Risk Management Panel

Riverdale, N.Y. – Last week, the University of Mount Saint Vincent welcomed several senior executives for a Risk Management Panel, allowing students from the Department of Accounting, Business, and Economics the opportunity to learn about the role of risk management and how to approach strategic risks, as well as career opportunities in the field of risk management, insurance, underwriting, and finance.

Esteemed panelists included Stefano Acunto, C. Edward “Chuck” Chaplin, Henry Gutierrez ’11, and Raul Rivera.

Stefano Acunto is the president and chief executive officer of of CINN Group, Inc., which he founded as a publishing company in 1978. Today, it is a private group of companies in media, insurance, and capital markets. He is the vice chairman of the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities’ Council of Governing Boards, serves on the Board of Trustees at the University of Mount Saint Vincent and John Cabot University of Rome, and is a member of the Board of Chancellors at Consular Corps College, based in Washington. He serves on the board of directors at the New York Risk and Insurance Exchange and several other companies in the financial sector. Appointed Hon. Vice Consul for Italy in New York State from 2002-2017, he was decorated with the rank of Commendatore, Order of Merit, Republic of Italy, and also received Italy’s Star of Solidarity for his service. Additionally, he is the chairman of the Italian Academy Foundation and the American Friends of La Scala.

C. Edward “Chuck” Chaplin is currently the chairman at Brighthouse Financial Inc. Before his role at Brighthouse, he retired from an extensive career at MBIA, Inc., a provider of financial guarantee insurance and the largest municipal bond-only insurer. At MBIA, Mr. Chaplin held several high-profile positions, such as president, chief financial officer, and chief administrative officer. Prior to joining MBIA, he was senior vice president and treasurer of Prudential Financial Inc., a firm he joined in 1983 and for which he held various senior management positions, including regional vice president of Prudential Mortgage Capital Company. He is a member of the Board of Directors at MGIC Investment Corporation and also serves on MGIC’s Risk Management and Securities Investment Committees.

Henry Gutierrez, an alumnus from the Class of 2011, graduated from Mount Saint Vincent with degrees in both history and sociology. He currently works as a commercial and risk underwriter at Zurich North America. Zurich is a leading commercial property-casualty insurance provider serving the global corporate, large corporate, middle market, and specialties and programs sectors through the individual member companies of Zurich in North America.

Raul Rivera has more than four decades of experience in the insurance industry. He joined National Benefit Life Insurance Company in 1980 and was elected as its president and chief operating officer in 1990. In 2001, he was named its chairman, president, and chief executive officer. He retired from his roles at National Benefit Life Insurance Company in 2017. He is currently a board member of the Insurance Federation of New York, Inc. and one of AmTrust Financial Services, Inc.’s subsidiaries. Additionally, Mr. Rivera is a member of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors and serves on the Board of Trustees at the University of Mount Saint Vincent.
