Mount Humanities Professor’s Artwork to Be Showcased

Richard Barnet Chosen as one of National Sculpture Society’s Finest

Riverdale, NY – Richard Barnet, an Associate Professor in the Humanities Department at the College of Mount Saint Vincent will have his artwork on display at the National Sculpture Society’s exhibition known as the Elected Members Invitational in midtown Manhattan. The bronze piece created by Barnet is entitled Ship with Mountains. The showcase will be open on Monday, July 14 at the organization’s headquarters in the Park Ave. Atrium, and will end on November 14, 2008.

Barnet is one of the 36 artists to have his work on display. The bronze sculpture Ship with Mountains was created in 2006. Weighing about 75 pounds, the piece measures 21 inches long, 15 inches high, and 9 inches wide. It is valued to be worth $7,000.

He calls his pieces associational rather than representational. “They do not depict directly a subject as a portrait or figure may,” explains Barnet. “Rather they combine shapes suggested by two or more areas of subject matter and also include shapes that occur to me, and sometimes are needed for the physical structures of the sound.”

The Elected Members Invitational is an annual exhibition that showcases the work of some of the organization’s best artists. Sculptors from all over the world submit their work in hopes of being a member of the Society. Members are voted by a jury of their peers. Artwork submitted reflects differences in style, subject, and discipline. They can create real or imaginative characters using a variety of mediums such as marble, terra cotta, and wood.

The National Sculpture Society was founded in New York City in 1893 by a group of America’s most prominent sculptors. It is the oldest organization of professional sculptors in the United States. Its members have created much of the country’s public sculptures, coins, and medals since the late 1800s. The National Sculpture Society is dedicated to the creation and showcasing of art that is inspired by nature.

Ship with Mountains will be at 237 Park Ave/466 Lexington Ave. The Elected Member’s Invitational is open to the public Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. All exhibitions are free of charge.
