Mount MDs Fundraise for Orphanage Outreach Program in Dominican Republic
2/11/2009
Riverdale, NY – Members of the Mount MDs Pre-Medical Club at the University of Mount Saint Vincent will volunteer with Orphanage Outreach, a non-profit organization that helps children living in poverty in Monti Cristi, Dominican Republic. They will help raise funds to build a much needed addition to the orphanage. Sixteen Mount students will spend their spring break from March 16 to March 20, 2009, live with the children, and provide them with basic necessities. The club is seeking donations from students, faculty, staff, administration and the public to meet their fundraising goal of $16,000.
The funds will help cover expenses for travel and provide children in the Dominican Republic with much needed food, water, housing, transportation, supervision, medical and dental care, and more. The orphanage has run out of sleeping space for children and a second floor is being built. Proceeds from fundraising will help raise the funds to finish building.
“Each of our members has found some way to volunteer in their local communities,” said Vandana Chand, President of the Mount MDs. “I strongly feel this program allows us to combine our desires and gives us a chance to help out the international community as a team.”
Since 1994, over 4000 Orphanage Outreach volunteers have joined the organization to hold a variety of activities for the children. It includes healthcare education, English classes, tutoring, arts & crafts, and physical work projects such as housing.
