Mount Saint Vincent Awarded $200K Grant from Verizon Foundation

8/4/2005

The Verizon Foundation has awarded the University of Mount Saint Vincent a $200,000 grant to purchase computers, software, and related technology for a state-of-the-art, twenty-four hour Computer Center currently under construction. The Computer Center will provide valuable facilities for study, research, and teaching and promote information access and career success in a highly technological setting on the Mount Saint Vincent campus. It will be located on the ground level of the Elizabeth Seton library.

The Computer Center will serve as a technology hub where students are offered the space, tools, and expertise necessary to undertake their own research outside the classroom. It will contain two fully-wired smart classrooms, top-of-the-line digital hardware and software for three general computer labs, comprehensive network equipment for a server room, and appropriate furnishings for a Cyber Café.

Thanks to supporters like the Verizon Foundation, the Center will help the Information Technology staff, the library staff, and faculty work together so that they can provide an integrated technological learning experience for students in a comfortable and convenient setting. The Center will also facilitate future activities of benefit to the larger community, such as training for elementary and secondary school teachers in public and non-public schools in the area.

“Verizon is a world leader in communication and technology,” said Charles L. Flynn, Jr., President of Mount Saint Vincent, “It is also a leader in community service with a deep commitment to educational opportunity. We are very, very grateful to Verizon for its generous grant in support of technological innovation that will help to keep our academic programs strong.”

The Verizon Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Verizon Communications. In 2004, the Verizon Foundation awarded more than 26,500 grants totaling $71.4 million to charitable and nonprofit agencies that focus on improving basic and computer literacy, enriching communities through technology, and creating a skilled work force. The foundation uses its resources in the United States and abroad to develop partnerships in technology and connect them with organizations serving the needs of diverse communities.
