Mount Saint Vincent Holds Annual Commencement Exercises May 20th

Thomas J. Moran, President and CEO of Mutual of America Insurance Company, Delivers Commencement Address

The University of Mount Saint Vincent held commencement exercises for the Class of 2006 Saturday, May 20, 2006 at 10:30 a.m.  Undergraduate degrees were awarded in the liberal arts, humanities, and sciences as well as graduate degrees in nursing and education. Thomas J. Moran, President and Chief Executive Officer of Mutual of America Insurance Company delivered the Commencement Address and received an honorary doctorate of law.

Moran challenged the graduates to strive for success in professional, person, and civic endeavors, and shared a quote from tennis legend Arthur Ashe that has inspired his humanitarian work: “Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.”

Moran was recently named one of Irish America magazine’s Top 100 Irish-Americans for his commitment to numerous civic and charitable organizations. He is Chairman of Concern Worldwide, an international humanitarian organization dedicated to the poorest people throughout the world.  Concern Worldwide has on-going healthcare and education initiatives in developing countries including India, Sudan, Cambodia, and Haiti.  Moran also serves on the Board of Directors for the National Center for Disability Services, the National Committee on American Foreign Policy, and the University College Dublin Graduate School of Business.  He has been awarded the Cavalry Medal, the Ellis Island Medal of Honor and the Terence Cardinal Cooke Award.

Thomas J. Moran has been President of Mutual of America since 1992. He was named Chief Executive Officer in 1994.  Moran started with Mutual of America in 1975 as a pension underwriter. Since then, he has worked in several areas of the Company, has participated on various committees of the American Council of Life Insurance, and is a member of the Board of the Life Insurance Council of New York.
