Mount Saint Vincent Hosts Annual Mount Mentor Orientation and Welcome Dinner

9/29/2015

Riverdale, N.Y. – For years, the College’s Mount Mentors Program has paired prominent thought leaders and business professionals with exceptional students. On September 9, the College hosted the Program’s annual orientation and welcome dinner, where continuing mentees reconnected with mentors, and new student participants met and mingled with advisors.

Margaret Hughes, Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Director of the Mount Mentors Program, has successfully paired 32 students with notable alumnae/i, trustees, and friends of the College for this year’s cohort. Typically, students are paired with mentors who work outside the mentees field of interest in order to emphasize the transferability and universal nature of the skills necessary for success in any field.

At the dinner, Dr. Hughes tied in the College’s tradition of a liberal education, explaining to the mentees that their education extends beyond knowledge, skills, and preparation for work—the College, and its authentic programs, seek the development of the whole person.

“The liberal arts, especially the humanities, rely on mentoring,” said Dr. Hughes. “In the study of the liberal arts, we look to other human beings for guidance about who we are and how we should live. In the liberal arts, as in mentoring, we learn wisdom from the experience of others.”

The Mount Mentors Program provides students with the opportunity to integrate the habits of mind that they have developed in their academic studies, into their way of living and conducting themselves, especially in regard to their professional development. Students’ relationships with their mentors allow the students to see the implications of their college education on their lives beyond the classroom.
