President Supports Faculty Who Sign “Open Letter to Obama”

Riverdale, N.Y. – Charles L. Flynn, Jr., president of the University of Mount Saint Vincent, has declared his support of an initiative to challenge the White House’s proposed guidelines for teacher preparation. The “Open Letter to President Obama and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan,” penned by Kevin G. Basmadjian, Dean of the School of Education at Quinnipiac University, is being circulated to deans of teacher education programs across the country.

Mary Ellen Sullivan, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Teacher Education, signed the Open Letter in solidarity with the sentiments it expresses. “It’s time to stop blaming teachers for society’s ills and responding by over-regulating teacher education. We need to work together to find creative solutions to problems in the nation’s most challenging schools,” said Dr. Sullivan.
