Mount Saint Vincent to Host Scholar and Author Thomas Cahill

Thomas Cahill, the best-selling author of How the Irish Saved Civilization and The Gifts of the Jews, will visit the College on Tuesday, December 12, 2006.

Cahill will read from his latest book Mysteries of the Middle Ages, the fifth volume of his Hinges of History® series. Mysteries of the Middle Ages examines the religious and social culture of Medieval Europe, including the gradual emancipation of women, university life, modern philosophy and science, realistic art, and the separation of church and state. According to Kirkus Reviews “Cahill serves as an irresistible guide: never dull, sometimes provocative, often luminous.”

A native of the Bronx, Cahill earned a Bachelor of Arts in classical literature and philosophy, and a pontifical degree in philosophy from Fordham University. He went on to complete a Master of Fine Arts in film and dramatic literature at Columbia University, and studied scripture at New York’s Union Theological Seminary. Cahill recently spent two years as a Visiting Scholar at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America.  In 1999, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Alfred University in New York.

The reading will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 12 in the President’s Reception Room of the College’s Administration Building.  The University of Mount Saint Vincent is located at 6301 Riverdale Avenue, Riverdale New York.  Facilitated by Paperbacks Plus Bookstore of Riverdale, this event is free and all are welcome.
