5/28/2008

Seminar Follows in Footsteps of Pope Benedict XVI’s US Visit

Riverdale, NY – University of Mount Saint Vincent students Elizabeth Athenas and Maricon Fernandez were awarded scholarships to be among 50 college students who will participate in the third annual Path to Peace Foundation seminar on Catholic social thought for Catholic college students.  This year’s symposium is entitled Catholic College Students and the Common Good: Building a World of Hope and a Community of Peace.  Students will meet with UN personnel, religious leaders and other college students from around the United States and Canada to discuss ways the world can become a better place.

Ms. Athenas and Ms. Fernandez were recommended by Mount professors and the Campus Ministry to take part in the seminar. Their scholarships were provided, in part, by the Sisters of Charity.  They will receive room and board at the Passionist Spiritual Center in the Bronx for the duration of the six day conference.  They will take daily trips to the United Nations, meet with a variety of UN personnel and religious leaders and attend sessions devoted to Catholic Church concepts such as social teaching and relationship between the United Nations and the Vatican. “We are delighted to support their participation in this important global view of the Church and know that the information gained will serve them well now and in the years ahead,” said Cecilia Harriendorf, S.C. of the Campus Ministry Office.

This will be the third seminar the Foundation has held for Catholic college students. The conference will follow in the footsteps of the recently completed visit of Pope Benedict XVI’s visit to the United States and will give College students a platform to engage international leaders and members of the UN to promote the Pope’s message of hope.  The gathering of college students will be led by Archbishop Celestino Migliore, Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations and President of the Path to Peace Foundation.

The Path to Peace Foundation was established in 1991 to support the educational, cultural and humanitarian activities which complement diplomatic parameters of the Holy See Mission to the United Nations. The purpose is to spread the word of peace through words and teachings of the Pope.
