Students and Faculty Present Scholarly Work at Eastern Psychological Association Meeting

Riverdale, N.Y. – The College’s Department of Psychology continues the strong tradition of supporting research collaborations between students and faculty. Most recently, a group of Mount scholars attended the annual meeting of the Eastern Psychological Association (EPA), held in New York City, from March 3-5, 2016.

Stephanie Berger and Jacki Rodriguez ’16Matthew Munroe ’16 and Dr. Daniel Hrubes, Department Chair and Associate Professor of Psychology, presented research investigating whether judgments of deceptions were affected by type, role, and relation to target, titled “Investigating Factors that Influence Judgments of Harmless Deceptions.” Jacki Rodriguez ’16 and Dr. Stephanie Berger, Associate Professor of Psychology, presented research exploring the accuracy in autobiographical memory by measuring student-athletes’ recall for individual statistics (points scored, minutes played, rebounds and assists, fouls and turnovers) and comparing accuracy of students with different sports goals, titled “Student-Athlete Autobiographical Memory and the Exploration of Goal Orientation.” Matthew Samaan ’16 presented research findings examining the relationship between stress and mind-wandering in academic situations, titled “Correlation of Mind-Wandering and Stress in the Academic Environment and Its Relationship.”

Matthew Samaan ’16Additionally, alumnae Ann Marie Ingravallo ’15 and Sutton King ’15 joined Dr. Sumithra Raghavan, Assistant Professor of Psychology, in presenting research examining the acculturative stress and academic performance of an undergraduate sample, titled “The Relationship between Acculturative Stress and Academic Performance in a Diverse Undergraduate Population.”

The EPA is the oldest of the regional psychological associations in the United States. At the association’s annual meeting, faculty and students have an opportunity to network and make connections, as well as learn from established members who are presenting the latest advances in professional and scientific study in the field of psychology.
