Thinking Bigger: Gender, Power, and Oppression

Riverdale, N.Y. – One in three women worldwide experience gender-based violence. The time for change is here—and Mount Saint Vincent is engaging in the discussion on gender equality and the empowerment of women.
In support of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence—an annual, decades-long international campaign originating from the first Women’s Global Leadership Institute—the College is hosting “Gender, Power, and Oppression,” a symposium to enhance the conversation about the prevention and elimination of gender violence.
The call for global action to increase awareness, galvanize advocacy efforts, and share knowledge has motivated students in Phins for Change, a newly established student organization on campus.
“We are thrilled to be hosting this symposium,” said Wantoe T. Wantoe ’22, Mount student activist and president of the club. “We believe the world should stand united with one goal and voice against sexual and gender based-violence and increasing inequality. All are invited to attend. We are not only going to talk, but we are going to listen to the voices and stories of the entire Mount community.”
Phins for Change aims to inspire a commitment to sustainable change and professional purpose through service, blogging, panels, and participation in the annual Youth Assembly at the United Nations. The group has partnered with various departments and programs to organize this event, including the Departments of Sociology and Philosophy and Religious Studies; Women’s Studies; Campus Ministry; the Sisters of Charity of New York’s Office of Peace, Justice, and Integrity of Creation; and the Finance and Investment Club.
Mount panelists include moderator Omar Nagi, Associate Professor of Sociology; Layla Merritt, Adjunct Professor of English; Matthew Shields, Director for Mission and Ministry; and Juliana Danise ’19.
