Teacher Residency Program

The University of Mount Saint Vincent offers a 14-month accelerated Master of Science degree in either Adolescent and Special Education or Childhood and Special Education for those who wish to receive a New York State teaching license with dual certification. This program blends academic content with practical classroom teaching experience through a Teaching Residency Program.

Teacher Residency Program participants spend a year working in the classroom as apprentices with graduate coursework in the evening. Teachers trained in this type of clinically-rich setting have been proven to be highly effective educators.

Admission Criteria
This Program is also ideally suited for students who have pursued degrees in subject areas other than education and who have decided to pursue a career with profound meaning and impact. The following majors will have fulfilled the content core requirements for the M.S. in Childhood Education degree: psychology, sociology, communication, biology, chemistry, general science, mathematics, social studies, Spanish, English, or an interdisciplinary major that combines the two aforementioned areas. The following majors will have fulfilled the content core requirements for the M.S. in Adolescent Education degree: biology, English, mathematics, or social studies.

Students who plan to pursue a major in education are strongly encouraged to consider this clinically-rich option as they complete their preparation for a career in teaching. Having fulfilled some of the program requirements in their area of study, they will have more flexibility in completing the necessary academic coursework.
