U.S. Air Force ROTC
The University of Mount Saint Vincent currently has a “cross-town” agreement with Air Force ROTC Detachment 560, based out of Manhattan College. Students from Mount Saint Vincent have the option to participate in AFROTC.
Through the Air Force ROTC program, students pursue a commission in the U.S. Air Force. Once commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, graduates of the Air Force ROTC program serve on active duty for a specified period of time. Course content includes Foundations of the U.S. Air Force, Evolution of Airpower, Leadership Studies, and National Security Affairs.
An integral part of the Air Force ROTC program is Leadership Laboratory and Physical Training. Students are required to attend both functions and must meet all attendance and academic requirements in order to remain in good standing within the program.
About Air Force ROTC
The Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) is designed to recruit and educate officer candidates through college campus programs based on Air Force requirements. The Air Force provides students with training and money to help start their career and cover college expenses. In return, students commit to a term of service in the military after earning their degrees. The military gets bright, young officers who are well-trained and well-educated, and students get a college education and a guaranteed career after graduation.
Scholarships
Air Force ROTC scholarships can help with tuition, books and other school-related expenses, and extra spending money. Air Force ROTC offers High School Scholarships and Enlisted Scholarships for enlisted airmen who can pursue a commission (appointment by the President of the United States) in nearly 1,000 schools with Air Force ROTC programs. Program
To become a commissioned officer in the U.S. Air Force through Air Force ROTC, students must complete the four-year program. It is important to remember to enroll in AFROTC at the same time and in the same manner as you do for your first college courses.
General Military Course
The first two years of the Air Force ROTC four-year program, the General Military Course, consist of one hour of classroom work and one to two hours of leadership laboratory each week. The General Military Course is a chance for students who are not on an Air Force ROTC scholarships to test the program with no obligation.
After completing the General Military Course requirements, students who wish to compete for entry into the last two years of the program, the Professional Officer Course, must do so under the requirements of the Professional Officer Course selection system, which uses grade point average, unit commander evaluation and aptitude test scores to determine if the candidates have officer potential.
Summer Four-Week Field Training
Students who have been selected for the Professional Officer Course must successfully complete a summer four-week field-training unit at an assigned Air Force base before entering the Professional Officer Course. Those who are enrolled in the Professional Officer Course, must attend class three hours a week and participate in a weekly leadership laboratory (from one to two hours).
Professional Officer Course
In the Professional Officer Course, students apply what they learned in the General Military Course and at field-training units. Students have the opportunity to conduct the leadership laboratories and manage the unit’s cadet corps. Each unit has a cadet corps based on the Air Force organizational pattern of flight, squadron, group and wing. Professional Officer Course classes are small and focus on group discussions and cadet presentations. Classroom topics include management, communication skills and national defense policy. Once you have enrolled in the Professional Officer Course, you are enlisted in the Air Force Reserve and assigned to the Obligated Reserve Section. This entitles you to a monthly $300-$500 nontaxable subsistence allowance during the academic year.
