Student Health Insurance

All full-time matriculated University of Mount Saint Vincent on-campus students are required to maintain adequate health insurance coverage. All on-campus students will have the Student Health Insurance premium on their bill pending the decision to enroll or waive out.

The University has selected a new broker for the 2026-2027 school year. Venbrook Student Insurance will manage the enrollment and waiver process on behalf of the University.

If you wish to use your personal or family health insurance, you must waive the University-sponsored plan to avoid being charged. You will receive an email once you have successfully submitted your waiver. Your plan will be reviewed to ensure that it is a comparable plan. You will then receive a second email approving or denying your waiver.

Eligibility and Enrollment

All domestic undergraduate students that are on campus who are taking 12 or more credit hours, all domestic graduate students that are on campus taking nine or more credit hours, and all international students—regardless of credit hours—are automatically enrolled in the insurance plan at registration. The premium for coverage will be added to their tuition bill, unless proof of comparable coverage is provided. Eligible students may also enroll their eligible dependents. Eligible dependents include the student’s spouse or domestic partner and dependent children under 26 years of age.

Waiver Criteria

Generally, only plans acquired through U.S. employment or purchased from the local state marketplaces will be filed and approved in the U.S. and compliant with the ACA. Plans that do not meet the above requirement include short-term medical plans, healthcare sharing plans, insurance plans from foreign healthcare systems, travel plans, and plans marketed to international students only. Examples of plans marketed to international students that do not meet the requirements include GBG Insurance, HDL Global Specialty, ISO, Tigerless, PGH (United), PSI, Student Medicover, and Tata AIG.

Not all U.S. health plans provide national coverage, and many out-of-state HMO, EPO, and Medicaid plans will not provide comprehensive non-emergency benefits in the geographical area surrounding the school.

Students covered by out-of-state HMO or EPO plans should contact their insurance company and apply for an away-from-home rider. Most insurance companies offer these riders for students studying away from home. If you have an HMO or EPO plan from a state other than NY, NJ, or CT and do not have an away-from-home rider extending your coverage to PA, you cannot waive.

Students insured by NJ or CT Medicaid should be aware that most Medicaid plans do not provide comprehensive non-emergency services outside of the home state. Students with NJ or CT Medicaid can waive with their out-of-state plan, but are responsible for finding and/or traveling to providers in their network.

Students insured by Medicaid from states other than NY, NJ, and CT cannot waive with their out-of-state Medicaid.

Waiver forms may be reviewed, and if the plan does not meet the requirements, you will be notified that your waiver form has not been accepted.
