Tuition Remission and Tuition Exchange

Explore the programs below to learn about eligibility requirements, benefits, and application procedures.

Tuition Remission

The University of Mount Saint Vincent’s Tuition Remission Program is designed to encourage eligible full-time employees, their spouses, and dependent children to pursue an undergraduate degree through the University’s traditional academic programs.

Eligibility and benefit amounts vary depending on the employee’s length of service, employment status, and the applicant’s relationship to the employee.

Eligibility and Benefits

Full-Time Employees

Full-time regular employees who do not already hold an undergraduate degree may apply for tuition remission after completing three months of employment.

Eligible employees may receive full undergraduate tuition remission, subject to the following conditions:

  • Applicants must meet all admission requirements outlined in the University’s academic catalog.
  • Tuition remission covers eligible undergraduate tuition only. Associated fees remain the employee’s responsibility.
  • Employees may enroll in a maximum of six credits per academic term, up to 18 credits per academic year.
  • Courses must be scheduled outside the employee’s regular working hours.
  • Employees receiving this benefit must commit to remaining employed at UMSV for at least two years after completing their degree requirements. If this commitment is not fulfilled, the employee must reimburse the University for 50% of the total tuition remitted for their coursework.
  • File the FAFSA application at studentaid.gov. UMSV’s school code is 002703.
  • File the NYS TAP application at hesc.ny.gov. UMSV’s school code is 0130.

Tuition remission eligibility ends before the beginning of the academic term following the employee’s separation from the University.

Spouses and Dependent Children

The spouse or dependent child under age 26 of an eligible full-time employee may qualify for undergraduate tuition remission.

The benefit is structured as follows:

  • After three months of the employee’s service: Eligible spouses and dependent children may receive 50% undergraduate tuition remission beginning with the academic term following the employee’s third month of employment.
  • After one year of the employee’s service: Eligible spouses and dependent children may qualify for 100% undergraduate tuition remission beginning with the academic term following the employee’s first year of employment, provided they meet and maintain the University’s matriculation requirements.

Students must apply for all available financial aid for which they are eligible, including federal aid, New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP), Regents Scholarships, institutional incentives, and other applicable awards. Tuition Remission amount will vary by student due to additional awards. Once the student begins enrollment, these funds are returned to the University in accordance with the University’s tuition remission policy.

The benefit is limited to eight consecutive academic terms and a maximum of 120 for BA or 126 for BS attempted credit hours toward a bachelor’s degree. Exceptions to consecutive enrollment requirements may be considered for military service, serious illness, or other unavoidable extenuating circumstances.

Summer and intersession tuition, fees, and Housing and Meals are the responsibilities of the student and/or parent.

Tuition remission eligibility for spouses and dependent children ends with the start of the academic term following the employee’s separation from the University.

Retired Employees

Retired employees may qualify for undergraduate tuition remission if they meet the University’s service and age requirements.

  • Eligible full-time retirees: Individuals with at least 10 years of continuous full-time service who are at least 59½ years old immediately before retirement may receive up to six tuition-free undergraduate credits per academic term, with a maximum of 18 credits per academic year, until a degree is earned.
  • Eligible part-time retirees: Individuals with at least 10 years of continuous part-time service who are at least 59½ years old at retirement may receive up to three tuition-free undergraduate credits per academic term, with a maximum of 18 credits per academic year, until a degree is earned.

Retiree students must meet the applicable requirements outlined in the University’s academic catalog. Tuition Remission forms must be obtained through the Office of Human Resources.
