10.1 Teaching Load

10.1.1 Full-Time Faculty
The upper limit of the standard teaching load for full-time faculty is 21 credit hours per academic year with no more than three course preparations per semester. Faculty may utilize one off-campus day per week for course preparation and scholarly activity. Faculty schedules must cover four days a week and all full-time faculty must be on campus four full days per week.

FYE 101, the fourth hour of the rare four-hour, non-science course, and certain supplementary non-science “laboratory” or recitation contact hours are considered overload assignments.

Policy for equivalence of normal lecture periods with those of laboratory and studio hours, field observation, independent study, team teaching, clinical hours, etc., is determined by the Provost/Dean of Faculty.

In calculating Full Time Faculty workloads, faculty workloads for both undergraduate and graduate courses are equal to the student credit hours. Exceptions are sometimes made for laboratory and clinical hours.

Faculty schedules must cover four days a week and all full-time faculty must be on campus four full days per week. Members of the faculty sometimes ask for a clear definition of “full day.” The College prefers the expression “full day” because it reflects the importance of professional judgement. Most faculty work long hours. It is important that they work many of those hours on campus to participate fully in the life of the College. On the one hand, there is no time clock. On the other, it would be difficult to understand a full day as routinely suggesting less than six and a half hours.

10.1.2 Part-Time Faculty
The workload for part-time faculty may not exceed twelve teaching credit hours per academic year.
