1.2 Definition of Faculty Status
The Faculty of the University of Mount Saint Vincent are all instructional employees and professional librarians. All special categories of faculty described in the Faculty Handbook are members of the faculty, subject to the limitations set forth in their titles.
Requirements and procedures for appointment to the faculty are set forth in this Faculty Handbook. The University of Mount Saint Vincent does not discriminate based upon age, race, creed, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation military or veteran status, marital status, disability, genetic predisposition, or any other categories protected under applicable federal, state and local law.
Terms of appointment are specified by letters of appointment and contracts. These require that all members of the faculty meet the requirements and obligations set forth in the Faculty Handbook and those policies adopted by the College Senate and approved by the President and the Board of Trustees.
The College and the full-time faculty member are related as employer and employee. In this relationship the College is legally responsible for engaging the faculty member for a specified period of time for a stipulated annual salary for instruction, student advisement and counseling, participation in committee activities and College service, attendance at student functions, and participation in academic functions. In appointing full-time faculty members, the University of Mount Saint Vincent assumes that his or her service to the College is the predominant professional interest in life. Therefore, the College may call upon the full-time faculty member to devote the major portion of each working day to the College, with a minimum of four full days per week spent on the College campus or when required by the discipline, engaged in instructional responsibilities in the field, e.g. Nursing, Teacher Education.
1.2.1 Full-Time Faculty
Full-time faculty status is appointed to an appropriate faculty rank. Full-time faculty are expected to teach a standard assignment of twenty-one credit hours per academic year. This assignment is normally fulfilled during the fall and spring semesters, unless course cancellations require reassignment in either the January or May Intersession.
1.2.2 Part-Time Faculty
Part-time faculty (adjunct faculty) are those instructional faculty who teach no more than nine teaching credit hours per term and no more than twelve teaching credit hours per year.
1.2.3 Temporary Faculty
Temporary faculty are appointed to the appropriate rank on a visiting status.
1.2.4 Special Appointment Faculty
Special categories of faculty include Professor Emeritus, Associate Professor Emeritus, and special appointments made when the need arises, including such categories as Lecturer, and Research Assistant.
