UMSV 501 Crisis Intervention
Policy Name: Crisis Intervention
If you have immediate concerns about another student’s safety, do not leave them alone. Call the Counseling Center at 718.405.3332 to see if a clinician is available. You can also email the Counseling Center at counseling@umsv.edu.
If no one answers, or if the Counseling Center is closed, please call one of the following offices, which are here to help all students, faculty, and staff:
- Office of Student Affairs 718.405.3253/3226 in Founders Hall 114
- Office of Campus Security and Safety at 718.405.3434 in Maloney Center 1
- In an emergency situation call:
- 911
- Campus Security | 718.405.3434
Students who are concerned about a friend are encouraged to contact a resident assistant, professor, or any staff member in addition to the offices listed above. Please do not walk a fellow student to the Counseling Center unless you have spoken to a clinician who is available.
Master of Science Physician Assistant Program | Faculty Responsibilities
- In the event of an emergency, PA faculty must address the situation immediately. If this is during normal business hours, the faculty member is to assess the situation following the guidance provided by the Counseling Center.
- If the emergency occurs after the Counseling Center is closed or unavailable, PA faculty must stabilize the situation as best as possible, then contact 911 immediately for further assistance (NYPD, NYFD-EMS) and must also contact campus safety and security, noting place, incident, and advising security that the NYPD and NYFD-EMS have been notified.
- Faculty must be cognizant of student/faculty welfare at all times and move all non-essential faculty and students to an area of safety.
- Faculty should remain attentive to students’ personal and academic well-being and maintain an open, supportive environment that encourages students to discuss concerns. Faculty are expected to recognize signs of potential distress or hardship and refer students, as appropriate, to available University and community resources related to housing insecurity, food insecurity, financial hardship, mental health, or other personal issues that may interfere with academic progress and student success.
Master of Science Physician Assistant Program | Student Responsibilities
- If program faculty are unavailable during an emergency, students are directed to the University of Mount Saint Vincent Crisis Counseling page, which gives specific details on handling the crisis situation.
- Students must immediately contact 911 (NYPD, NYFD-EMS) for assistance.
- Students must contact campus safety and security at 718.405.3434 in Maloney Center 1, giving the location (library, residency hall, etc.), nature of incident, and contact number of the individual making the call.
